Low Stakes is a tabletop roleplaying game inspired by What We Do in the Shadows, both the movie and the TV show.
In the game, you portray a vampire, werewolf, ghost, mystic, or maybe even a regular ol' human sharing a house together in the modern day. And you’re not very good at it. You'll create situation comedy style stories of gothic monsters trying to get by in a world that has moved on from their day. Conflict, character, humor...it's all there for the taking.
Low Stakes is a very rules-light RPG. Most of the time, you and the other players will simply roleplay your characters' words and actions. You'll only roll dice to do two things.
- Try to gain the upper hand and influence over your roommates
- Deal with your own personal problem areas
Both of these help you to generate as positive of an end result for your character as possible in the story you're telling.
There are confessional scenes, like in so many TV shows nowadays. In such scenes, you'll "speak to the camera" and reveal something. These revelations can both help and hinder your character and their roommates, complicating the story and generating humor (and sometimes drama). The results of confessionals can also help you with dice rolls.
The game uses a simple, sit-com style story structure. Multiple story outlines provide different prompts you can use to escalate the situation the characters are in. Once you're comfortable with how the game plays, you can easily improvise a whole story without a story outline.
