Part of the array of magical treasures included in fantasy roleplaying games since the very beginning, ioun stones are both whimsical and powerful wondrous items that have captured the attention and imagination of players and characters alike. Small gem and precious stones that orbit around a person's head and grant them magical powers, ioun stones have been one of my favorite magic items in the game since I first discovered them, and this zine gives me the opportunity to write on the subject to my nerdy heart's content.
The Ioun Codex is a 24-page, saddle-stitched, 5.5-inch by 8.5-inch B&W printed zine featuring a soft-touch laminated cover.
Inside you will find a collection of topics dealing with ioun stones in different ways, from a treatise on their origin to NPC experts on the subject, uses both standard and non-standard, monsters and locations, as well as ways to create a wide variety of ioun stones. Perhaps we may even learn about the fabled and powerful ioun core, and how to use one to craft a mighty sunblade.
The Ioun Codex is system-agnostic, old-school fantasy inspired, and usable with your game of choice.
- System-Agnostic: There are no rules for any specific system in the zine. Instead, there is descriptive text that can be easily used to assign rules based on your game of choice. If I describe someone as a wizard or mage, I'm not only saying they wield magic, you can understand those words to mean that character class in your game.
- Old-School Fantasy Inspired: My fantasy RPG DNA goes back to the famous red box, and the world presented in the Gazetteer series, as well as the 1st Edition grey box of the realms unremembered. I favor descriptive text that conveys setting and adventure in lands full of peril and wonder.
